Christmas Tree Shop Repairs @ Christmas
Posted December 9th, 2008 by tinaYes, ironically we’ve been visiting our new Christmas Tree Shop in Portsmouth, NH this month which makes this story more fun to tell. We’re trying to repair one of the doors to their stockroom. We can handle any type of residential door because we work with 100s of them every year but … Commercial doors are more challenging as they’re all different and we aren’t able to find parts locally. We’ve added security bars to doors, replaced weatherstripping, re-installed interior doors that someone has kicked in … The door we’re working on at the Christmas Tree Shop is a pair of swinging doors that close automatically when they’re working properly (see photos below). That’s what this repair is all about, one of the doors isn’t closing automatically. Why weren’t we able to fix the door on the first visit?
- Technician analyzed the problem and indicated the spring load feature that lifts the door (and closes the door once the pressure is released) wasn’t working, so we assumed it needed to be replaced.
- When we communicated this information to the national maintenance company who sent us there, they told us it was a new door. Then we called the manufacturer who sent us the assembly and installation directions, and requested that we that we try to adjust the door to fix the problem.
- Today we were there to adjust the door. We ended up taking the door apart, and discovered that a key part simply wasn’t there, i.e. probably missing when they first installed the door. With the instructions, we were able to identify the missing part. We’ll order the part, and return later to install. Most jobs don’t take multiple visits but when they do, we have a process to stay on top of them until they are completed (commercial parts can take months to get).
